Song of the Day – “Mountains of Burma” by Midnight Oil

It’s been a very Midnight Oil couple of days for me.  I’m in the process of getting all the Oil I have onto my iPod.  I had to go through many backup DVDs to get it all together… and I’m Mikeifying them as I go.  Some of them I’ve had for so long, I’ve got them copied as mp3 from cassette.

The “Blue Sky Mining” album from 1990 is one I have on cassette, vinyl and CD.  The vinyl is actually a limited edition clear blue pressing… which is neat.  For a long time in High School, I’d listen to my taped copy of the album as I rode the bus to and fro.

The album has a great warm sound to it.  This song in particular is probably my favorite Midnight Oil song, and it’s certainly my favorite on this album.  Many of The Oil’s songs are about Aussie politics, and I guess this one is no different.  But they had such wonderful music too, you can get even their lyrics stuck in your head as melodies.

The whole album is worth checking out, as is “Diesel and Dust”.  Peter Garret, the tall and bald singer dude, is now a politician.  That’s all I have to say about that.

It’s funny how I can enjoy someone’s music even though I don’t agree with their politics.  Midnight Oil isn’t a good example of what I’m trying to say with this, so I’ll mention Sammy Hagar.

Sammy Hagar has put out some great, fun music.  He’s also a complete fucking douchebag when it comes to speaking his “mind” on issues of the day.  Shut up and play your guitar, you rich asshole.  And sing the words to the song, but don’t go talking about anything else.

I still have lots of Sammy on my iPod.  When he’s singing an innocent party song, like “Cruisin’ & Boozin'” – about the innocent thrills of drinking liquor whilst driving an automobile – he’s… uh… wait a minute…. maybe that’s not so innocent.  I wonder if he regrets that song.

Meh.  Time to update the FembotWiki front page!
