I just read a Wikipedia article about what this song is about. I can take that or leave it I guess. To me, this song is about oppression. I can hear “Who’ll stop the reign” in that chorus too. That’s one of the reasons I like this song. It can be interpreted in different ways.
John Fogerty wrote this just after he had attended Woodstock. That explains the part about the crowd cheering for more and getting rained on. The hippies were complaining about some pretty important issues. Their solution was to smoke lots of dope and do lots of drugs… so things didn’t work out too good. And we have all of those same issues to deal with today.
Thanks for nothing, hippies.
Actually, the years and decades before the late 60s compared to the years and decades after the 60s are a lot better in the Western world in some ways. I guess all those smelly stoners rattled things up a bit in a good way.
This is one of those songs that gives me chills down my spine when I hear it. It happens when Mr. Fogerty sings the line “Five-Year Plans and New Deals… wrapped in golden chains…”
Damn. Great tune.
So why am I not all full of jokes today? I’m tired. It’s Friday and I worked all week. I can’t even muster the energy to insert a funny or interesting image into this post.
Nighty-night.
