Song of the Day – “Anno Mundi” by Black Sabbath

Let’s get something out of the way right off the bat.

If you’re a fan of classic Sab, then no doubt you’re scratching your head and saying to yourself in an outlandish mock cockney accent “Oi sure don’t wumembah dis one, gubbnah!”

And to that I say “of course not!  You damned fool!  Have you any idea the process that you have started by seeking out the Emerald of…”

Hang on… sorry.  I was getting way off topic there.  Fuck, I was making up some kind of story or something.  My point is that this song was not recorded in those classic days when Ozzy Osbourne manned the mic.  No friend, this comes from 1990.  A time in which Black Sabbath was basically just Tony Iommi and whoever he wanted to be in his band at the time.

Recently, I listened to my collection of post-Ozzy Sabbath albums.  This is what I felt like after listening to them all:

Now this might sound kind of unfair to Mr. Iommi, because there are some fucking awesome songs on those 11 albums.  But most of them aren’t so hot.

And “Anno Mundi” is one of the songs I used to think was not so hot.  When I first heard it, I thought it was kind of typical of the rest of that late 80s Sabbath mediocrity.  The production, sadly, is.  It’s  all reverbed-the fuck right up.  And that’s a shame, because it’s a damn fine song.

The lyrics are even great, which took me a long time to realize too.  I can’t seem to find the page now, but I read a snippet of an interview with either Toni Iommi or Toni Martin.  And when asked about the meaning of this song, they said that it’s packed with meaning, and that most of the lines are questions without answers.  And time is running out.

So after a few listens… yeah.  Heavy.  Just way too fucking bad about that shitty 80s metal production sound. There needs to be some remixing on those 80s and 90s Sabbath albums.

But that’s all I wanted to say.  Sorry it’s not packed full of funny jokes or anything more interesting.  I have the flu again, and I actually started writing this blog post last freaking week.  Bleh.

So here’s something funny and not in any way related to what I was just talking about:
